About :   My Father, My King (Second Son Chronicles Book 2)

My father my king by Pamela Taylor starts with the king's heirs paying their last respects to his passing and realizing the grave task before them. The crown passes to Harold, the uncle of Alfred, the novel’s protagonist and narrator. Alfred had been the king's favorite grandson and had enjoyed privileges granted and tutelage given personally by the deceased king.

The new king is unwed, so one of the first challenges of his court is to find him the perfect bride. His choices range from ladies nineteen to twenty-eight. It is interesting to note that King Harold feared a wife of 19 might be too young for him while a wife of 28 might be too old for childbearing. The quest was akin to "The Bachelor"  of yore production.

King Harold is also cognizant that he has border problems with ill-educated immigrants from the western territories who might be a threat to the peace of his kingdom.

Another important character in the story is a man named “Ralf,” who is an enemy of King Harold and Alfred’s worst nemesis.  Ever watchful and practical, Ralf awaits his chance to settle the blood feud he has with Alfred and his family.

King Harold’s reign comes to a sudden untimely end when he’s killed in battle. His demise leaves Queen Petronilla his bride of a few months, to mourn his death and manage the affairs of the Kingdom.

It is at this junction in the novel where the tension, complications of ascension to the throne, and the concerns of impending battles ratchet up the story’s action.

As the title suggests, the next king is Alfred’s father, Edward. Much of the novel evolves from the life and interactions of the lords and ladies of the court.  Taylor transports you back centuries to an engaging period that is a figment of her imagination that closely parallels the world of the middle ages. Interestingly, many of the novel’s dilemmas of this imaginary time closely parallel some of our present-day issues.

Written in elegant prose, with an intricate storyline that is woven together like a fine medieval tapestry. Taylor gives us a convincing glimpse into the world of the clergy, courtiers, knights, and royalty of a medieval kingdom. She incorporates a lovely thread of suspense through the entire story, and adds interesting love stories to it. Her writing and plotting are well crafted.  Action is there, along with the human joys and woes her heroes encounter. Spirit crushing bad things repeatedly happen to her main characters, but there is always a glimmering hope in each crisis that her characters face that propel them forward. My father my king, is truly a unique story with an incredibly detailed world and history and a solid piece of fiction that promises more to come.

About Pamela Taylor

Pamela Taylor brings her love of history to the art of story-telling. An avid reader of historical fact and fiction throughout her life, she finds the past offers rich sources for character, ambiance, and plot that allow readers to escape into a world totally unlike their daily lives.

"I'd tried my hand at several ideas and wasn't quite satisfied with any of them," she says. "I've always been intrigued by the importance of first sentences and first paragraphs. So when the opening of Second Son came to me, utterly unbidden, during one of those nights when one's mind won't shut down and let sleep take over, I knew I had to see where it would take me.

"Once I found Alfred's voice, his story began to unfold. By the end of the first book, I was completely in love with him and knew that he had so much more to tell.

"Step into Alfred's world. Once you do, I'm confident you'll be as eager as I've been to discover what happens next."
