Book Review of :  Someone To Kiss My Scars

"Someone To Kiss My Scars," by Brooke Skipstone is a graphic novel about a character, Hunter Williams, who possesses a strange ability to view past events experienced by others.  The visions of these events are usually traumatic moments in their lives.  He sees them unfolding vividly in his mind as if he was physically there. He is able to look into these happenings with a 360-degree view, and his observations are even complete with smell.  Being a psychically endowed Peeking Tom isn’t Hunter’s only abnormality, he also has no memory of his past life. Years of his life have been erased from his mind.  Also erased from his life are his mother and younger brother.  What really happened to them?  He has some plausible accounting of their demise, but is it a false recollection?

Hunter has a strange manifestation of PTSD brought on by an event that is buried deep in his consciousness.  He is torn with trying to unravel his past, and in the meantime, he finds himself continually helping others deal with their past or their current problems. His best friend, Jazz, is one of those that he supports. She has many horrible memories she would prefer to forget.

Hunter’s extraordinary ability to envision the doings of others often contain a sexual component in them, which makes him feel very uneasy.  To make matters worse, he can only stop the visions if he writes his observations down in detail.  The stories are of different people in very compromising private settings. Hunter hopes that these stories that play in his head will eventually tell him who he once was.

Someone To Kiss My Scars is a novel that serves as an expose on childhood sexual abuse while delivering its message as a profoundly emotional dramatic page-turner. It is a courageous look at incest, rape, and other forms of sexual abuse. The intertwined lives of the characters come together as the story unfolds telling the tale of their survival, risk-taking, and inherent goodness and wickedness of people.

Skipstone’s details, imaginative tropes, attentive descriptions of people and their actions — offers an especially rich facsimile of a disturbing reality that society is ashamed of and chooses not to recognize. Skipstone’s novel is a lurid, yet audacious tale of recovering from repressed memories and sexual abuse. A story about a young man who knows much about a lot but little about himself.

As the story unfolds, Hunter’s erased past slowly percolates to the surface with shocking memories. However, they are painful recollections that are needed if he’s to unlock the secrets trapped within his own mind.

About Brooke Skipstone

Brooke Skipstone lives in Alaska, where she watches the mountains change colors with the seasons from her balcony. Where she feels the constant rush toward winter as the sunlight wanes for six months of the year, seven minutes each day, bringing crushing cold that lingers even as the sun climbs again. Where the burst of life during summer is urgent under twenty-four-hour daylight, lush and decadent. Where fish swim hundreds of miles up rivers past bear claws and nets and wheels and lines of rubber-clad combat fishers, arriving humped and ragged, dying as they spawn. Where danger from the land and its animals exhilarates the senses, forcing her to appreciate the difference between life and death. Where the edge between is sometimes too alluring.
