America: An Exceptional Nation by Donald L. Gilleland is a fascinating read for anyone who is interested in America’s history, its explosive growth, and world importance.  The book is very patriotic and it is obvious that Gilleland is proud of America and all of its accomplishments.

Beginning with a detailed look at the early demographics of our country and how they have evolved to current day, the author takes the reader on a journey that discusses our culture and habits and how they differ from other countries, therefore, laying a basis for America’s growth to exceptionalism.

Gilleland does a good job of discussing immigration, our founding father’s approach to accepting those from other nations, and how immigrants are viewed today.  Additionally, he offers practical solutions to what might be viewed by some as an immigration “problem”, complete with historical data as to how other administrations have controlled and regulated immigration. He points out that our northern border is more than twice as long as our southern border.

Far from a textbook, the author’s effort further discusses the economy, fuel sources, travel, communication sources, and a detailed look at the constitution in a way that differs greatly from the classroom.  His approach is insightful, interesting and entertaining.

The author makes it clear that America is indispensable to the world in part because we have the greatest military in history, with the best troops, training, and technology. He talks about America’s generosity to other nations and the large number of alliances we have with foreign countries. “America: An Exceptional Nation,” is an in-depth portrait of a great country, its explosive economic growth and its emergence as a world power and its role as the sole superpower. Gilleland discusses such contemporary and diverse topics as the politics of education, prior and current wars, Bill of Rights, Islamist, foreign aid, military recruiting issues and the rising influence of what was once America's minorities. Gilleland skips tackling political correctness in his book but virtually every other subject germane to America’s history is addressed. He sees Americans as a problem-solving people and the story of America as essentially one of difficulties being overcome by intelligence and skill, by faith and strength of purpose, by courage and persistence.”

Gilleland’s challenging but refreshing narrative and interpretation of American history are even more interesting to read if you have ever been exposed to some of the very negative textbooks on American history in college. No, this is not a book of the lifestyles of the rich and famous but a very serious read about the people who sacrificed and suffered for their families and their country. It’s about the problems we face and the challenges we have faced down. The book is sometimes controversial and always provocative. Gilleland’s views of individuals, events, themes, and issues are original, critical, and admiring, for he is, above all, a strong believer in the history and the destiny of the American people. Based on our current political and social climate, this book is a must read regardless of your political views.  Donald Gilleland’s love for our country is both endearing and infectious.
